The Bible says in Mark 11 that Jesus was hungry and seeing a fig tree from afar off He approached to only find leaves. But what many miss in this text is that Jesus knew, “it was not time for figs, yet.” So why did He look for figs knowing it wasn’t their season?
It is important to note here that the fig tree is an Old Testament symbol for Israel. And Jesus being the all-knowing one was using the “unproductive” tree as a teaching tool for His disciples. What was He teaching you ask? As you read on down in Mark 11, you’ll find Jesus expounding on faith, prayer and forgiveness. Jesus wanted us to be mindful of the curse only as a memorial for the days of old when Israel was unproductive. Today, the church must be fruitful in faith, prayer and forgiveness. We cannot just be pretty leaves flowing in the wind as hungry people pass by wondering, “Are you good….for nothing?”
